Metadata and Semantics Reseach Conference (MTSR) 2017
The 11th International Conference on Metadata and Semantics Research (MTSR'17) will be held at Tallinn University in Tallinn, Estonia from 28 November to 1 December 2017.
MTSR’17: Special Track on Digital Humanities and Digital Curation (DHC)
Professor Ernesto De Luca, head of the Digital Information and Research Infrastructure department at the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research will chair a special track on Digital Humanities and Digital Curation together with Paolo Bianchini (Turin University, Italy). The aim of this special track is to discuss the role of semantics and metadata in combination with the personalisation and adaptation of information and knowledge. We invite the community to a discussion in which we will try to find new creative ways to handle semantic technologies in cultural heritage, especially in digital humanities and digital curation.
Furthermore, DHC aims to improve the exchange of ideas between different communities involved in research concerning history, educational science, digital humanities, visualisation, machine learning, information retrieval, data mining, HCI, etc. The special track is especially intended for researchers working on multidisciplinary tasks who want to discuss problems and synergies.
The topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following aspects:
• Semantic-based data mining and information retrieval
• Semantic-based profiling, clustering and collaborative filtering
• Use of semantic-based technologies in cultural heritage
• Information discovery systems and recommendations
• Integration of metadata and semantic research into digital humanities and digital curation
• Open repositories and research infrastructures

Metadata and Semantics Research:
Ontologies are the central components of semantic tools and have been present in the fields of the arts and culture for some time. Several projects already use these semantic technologies. A project by the British Museum, for example, provides all available data on its entire collection as Linked Open Data (LOD). The European digital library project, Europeana also focuses on the global accessibility of cultural information as LOD. In 2009, the German Federal Government decided to create a German Digital Library (DDB), which should link numerous German cultural and academic facilities and integrate them at European level into Europeana.
