Australian schools’ approach to normalize diversity

An outer-suburban College from Australia, Melbourne is about to embed the Indigenous curriculum in order to teach the continent’s diversity for a change of the students’ perception of the continent and its different cultures. Classes as history, drama, art and music, as well as humanities and an outdoor education program are planned to be taught from preschool to year 12. There have been similar local projects before, but this approach is going to be broader and more encompassing. First points of contacts are Indigenous dolls, lullabies and stories for the youngest kids. Other schools enable encounters with the Indigenous culture by organizing inter-school football matches and by inviting artists and activists. Principals expect the change to be a long process but at last very worthwile.
