Chilean teachers’ strike about to come to an end?

After 36 days of strike the Chilean teachers are willing to agree on the government’s attempt to introduce a new professional curriculum. The conditions they set are an end of work overload, more professional autonomy, the respect of vacations and a fairer pay scale. The new plan includes performance tests and an increase of the working hours which the teachers would agree with if their requirements were met. Three different evaluation processes per year are intended to provide the best possible quality of education. However, several international studies have shown that performance examinations do not translate necessarily in its improvement. Finally the national teachers’ union hopes for a new dialogue since a new education minister was put in charge just a few weeks ago.
