Until Sunday, Bangladesh had hosted a gathering of the E-9 Initiative which includes Bangladesh, Brazil, China Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria and Pakistan. The matter of this meeting was to discuss the commitments of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Two-thirds of the worldwide illiterate adults live in the E-9 states as well as half of the out-of-school children, whose majority consists of girls. In order to face the challenges of these high-populated countries – they are home of over half of the world’s population – they have to “focus on equity, financing, learning achievement and harnessing technology for innovation and skills”, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova said.

Further obstacles that need to be overcome are overcrowded classrooms, the lack of trained teachers and a low number of school enrolments. The network was established in 1993 and has been promoting the strengthening of every education matter since then. It is committed to encourage the countries to share its experiences in every subject of education.
