Ireland cuts religion classes in primary schools

Recently the Irish Minister of Education abolished the Rule 68 – a symbol of Irelands past which gave religion classes a privileged status in primary schools. She agrees with the opinion of an 85 percent-majority of the primary school principals on the amount of time that religion takes in the curriculum. Furthermore she directed departmental officials to identify more of those questionable rules. The Bishops’ Council for Education did not criticize this development unduly but announces that it won’t change the teaching of religious education in Catholic schools.
