The education minister for the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Yvonne Gebauer (FDP) is currently preparing an edict that will require media studies to be integrated into school lessons.

Schools will be asked to prepare concepts by 2021, outlining how media studies can be integrated into teaching across disciplines.
The Verband Erziehung und Bildung NRW (VBE) (North Rhine-Westphalian Association for Education and Training) advises that school and federal authorities will be called upon to provide the necessary infrastructure and equipment to allow schools to implement these concepts.
In addition they point out that there are great regional variations in terms of the availability of modern technical equipment and internet access in schools. Urgent improvements must be made in this area if equal opportunities and educational equity are to be achieved.
Teachers within the VBE have welcomed the initiative to integrate media studies teaching across disciplines as opposed to introducing it as a separate subject and have demonstrated considerable willingness to address digital topics.
