New Turkish lessons in Berlin

Turkish lessons had been the responsibility of the Turkish embassy and were taught by teachers from Turkey. The consular lessons had been criticised for teaching content from the Koran in addition to the Turkish language.
As an alternative to the controversial consular lessons, 20 Berlin primary schools are now offering ‘Turkish as a Heritage Language’ clubs, in which teachers who speak both German and Turkish teach pupils about the geography and culture of Turkey as well as the language.
The new Turkish lessons will initially be introduced as part of a pilot project in 20 primary schools. The programme will be assessed at the end of the school year and may then be extended to further schools.
