NMC Horizon Report 2017 on higher education

The New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) recently released its yearly result of collaboration: The NMC Horizon Report: 2017 Higher Education Edition. The report presents the findings of the two organizations in emerging technologies with the potential to have an impact on education and concludes them to six key trends, six upcoming challenges and six developments made in the past or in the making.

Among many others, this years' subjects of interest are Deeper Learning Approaches,Collaborative and Mobile Learning as well as the Growing Focus on Measuring Learning and the Digital Literacy. When it comes to the learning approaches, the researchers found a trend of educators building connections between coursework, lectures and realistic work fields.

The aspect of collaborative and mobile learning is evolving as well – the authors mention the VR technology, telepresence and experiences of immersion.

Finally, there is a challenge that needs to be faced with a variety of measures. The researchers point out a digital illiteracy which is not overcome by the ability of just knowing how to use technology. The more important skill for students is to be able to use it in the context of the their chosen fields of studies and careers.
