Walkable giant maps on their way through North Alabama’s Elementary Schools

In Huntsville, Alabama, U.S.A, the students of the Highlands Elementary School got to learn about geography in a fun and physical way. The National Geographic Society offered the school a giant walk-on-able map showing Europe, 26 feet by 26 feet in size. Not only were the teachers convinced of the positive effect of this exercise: “[The kids] still remembered last year when we had the traveling map from Africa”. The students reported they learned about the different countries of the big continent. By giving them cards with names of countries, mountain ranges and other sites in Europe and letting them find these places on the map, teacher Hardee involved the kids this year as well. But the giant map doesn’t stay at this place. It moves to several other Elementary Schools and will return to the University of North Alabama where the program started in 2006.
