A study about the awareness of Open Educational Resources among faculty

The Babson Survey Research Group and Pearson published a study about the teachers’ awareness of Open Educational Resources (OER). 2144 faculty across several U.S. institutions were interviewed to explore the role of OER in higher education. The survey reveals that OER awareness does not necessarily match up with their OER usage. “While only about one-third of faculty members claim to be aware of open educational resources, nearly one-half report that they use OER.” There appear to be two causes: a lack of understanding of the term OER and resource choices without consideration to its licensing. Teachers mostly use Images and Videos for their teaching purposes and choose by the criteria proven efficacy and trusted quality. But there are reasons that deter faculty from using OER. Difficulties with finding satisfying resources and limited selection are a few of the causes.
