The exclusion of Western values in Chinese university curricula

The education minister of China expressed his strict view of the communist ideology in classrooms with a warning against Western values. In the past few years he threatened Chinese professors with punishments like expulsions from their duty, limited prison terms and up to imprisonments for life. A drastic case is the one of the former professor of economics Ilham Tohti. In September he was sentenced to life in prison as he championed the rights of the Muslim Uighur minority in the country during lectures at the Minzu University in Beijing. Seven of his students, all from ethnic minorities, were sentenced to three to eight years on separatism charge. With these actions the minister clarified the Communist Party’s leadership and reiterated the need of its strict control over education and educators.
