The History of Cartography

Cartography has been an important part of the human history for a long time. Since up to 8.000 years people have created and used maps as tools to define, explain and to navigate their way through the world. In 1987 the University of Chicago Press started publishing the History of Cartography, Volume One. Volume Two appeared over the following eleven years. Although the format and the high quality of printed images still meet the requirements of publishing maps, the online availability of material gets more and more attractive to the users of the publications. The first three volumes are available now on the website of the University of Chicago Press for free download.
