The lack of geography knowledge in the United States

The U.S. Nation’s Report Card informs the public about the academic achievement of elementary and secondary students every year and has unveiled that nearly three-quarters of the eighth-graders don’t have sufficient knowledge of geography. This deficit already starts with the education of the teachers who take few geography courses in college. Furthermore, a lack of resources for geography lessons is a problem. Getting quality classroom materials, outdated software or difficulties with taking field trips are described problems in the report. Most schools focus on teaching the students math, science and reading in order to ensure a high competence in STEM-fields. One state had even eliminated geography from the curriculum for over a decade and only recently added it back.
