Turkish education reforms cause shortage of classrooms

The Turkish Education Ministry published a report titled “Evacuation Report on Managerial, Innovation and Development Workshops”. The main problem in the education system is a lack of infrastructure caused by a reform from 2012. The new program called “4+4+4” was introduced and increases the compulsory education from eight to twelve years. One of the results of this change was a number of students per classroom which immediately increased up to 56. According to a report by the Cihan Confederation of Trade Unions there is a lack of 228.000 classrooms since the total number of students immediately increased by 700.000. Unfortunately the whole budget of the education ministry wouldn’t be enough to fill this gap. Finally, the ministry is planning to handle the problem of the English lessons’ deficiency – by increasing the classroom hours of compulsory English for fifth grad students and introducing it to primary schools. An action that will deepen the shortage of teachers and classrooms in the future.
